Kitchen Design for South East London

Where mid-century modern and contemporary European design come into their own

After the Second World War, Italy’s most brilliant architects tried their hand at industrial kitchen design, reinventing a dialogue between art and industry. This kitchen design movement began as a reaction to the ornate, handcrafted design of the past and Italian industrial designers sought to create products that were simple, functional, and elegant. Thanks to their efforts, we now enjoy some of the most iconic furniture and home decor items of all time, including the Flos Arco floor lamp featured above.

Origins of Italian Industrial Design

As World War II came to an end, Italy found itself in a state of economic ruin. In an effort to revive the country's fortunes, the government invested heavily in industry, specifically in the production of high-quality goods that could be exported. This coincided with a growing trend in Europe and America towards more casual, functional living. As a result, a new breed of designers emerged who were focused on creating products that were both beautiful and practical.
